I do research on racial differences in low birthweight and infant mortality. I teach SOCY/AFAM 401 African Americans and the U.S. Health Care System. This is an alphabetical list of Internet sites that I have found to be useful for my research and/or my teaching. 

AABHS: Association for Advancement of Blacks in Health Sciences - The Association for the Advancement of Blacks in the Health Sciences (AABHS) is a non-profit organization of Black professionals who work or are in training in the health sciences. Our mission at AABHS is three-fold: 1) to promote and encourage Black youth to pursue a higher education in the health sciences; 2) to optimize health services delivered to the Black community; and 3) to educate the community about health issues, particularly those prevalent amongst Blacks.

Addressing Health Disparities - The NIH Program of Action - The National Institutes of Health has a commitment to conduct and support research that will result in good health for all people. We have taken this commitment seriously: Each institute and center of NIH has developed its own individual strategy to combat the health gaps in the disease areas they study. In addition, the NIH-wide Program of Action attacks persistent health gaps on several fronts, which are explained in more detail on this site.

African American HealthCare and Medical Information - Blackhealthcare.com is a culturally oriented and ethnically focused comprehensive internet-based health and medical information provider dedicated to addressing the special health problems of African-Americans. The state of health for African-Americans is especially precarious. Chronic disease has an excessive impact on minority populations.

African American Men's Health Summit- African American Men's Health Summit - The African American Men's Health Summit will educate men about health disorders that affect them.  

African American Women - The Office on Women's Health (OWH) in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is the government's champion and focal point for women's health issues, and works to redress inequities in research, health care services, and education that have historically placed the health of women at risk.  The Office on Women's Health coordinates women's health efforts in HHS to eliminate disparities in health status and supports culturally sensitive educational programs  that encourage women to take personal responsibility for their own health and wellness.

African Americans Uniting For Life - The African Americans Uniting for Life (AAUL) Campaign was initiated by the National Marrow Donor Program to address the serious under representation of African Americans on the Marrow Donor Registry.  Because of the manner in which the HLA antigens (the blood cell traits used to match a donor with a patient) are inherited, the likelihood of a patient finding a suitable donor is greatest within his/her own racial group.  Consequently, a disproportionate number of African Americans are dying from treatable diseases because a marrow donor can not be located.

Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Home Page, formerly the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research - AHRQ, a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the lead agency charged with supporting research designed to improve the quality of healthcare, reduce its cost, improve patient safety, decrease medical errors, and broaden access to essential services. AHRQ sponsors and conducts research that provides evidence-based information on healthcare outcomes; quality; and cost, use, and access. The information helps healthcare decisionmakers—patients and clinicians, health system leaders, and policymakers—make more informed decisions and improve the quality of healthcare services.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is recognized as the lead federal agency for protecting the health and safety of people - at home and abroad, providing credible information to enhance health decisions, and promoting health through strong partnerships. CDC serves as the national focus for developing and applying disease prevention and control, environmental health, and health promotion and education activities designed to improve the health of the people of the United States

Centers of Excellence - The National Centers of Excellence in Women's Health (CoEs) serve as demonstration models for the Nation to provide innovative, comprehensive, multidisciplinary, and integrated health care systems for women. The CoEs provide for the specials needs of women, including the underserved and minorities,

Closing The Gap - is an online magazine that provides resources for physicians and consumers on promoting minority health through culturally relevant care. Pfizer Inc is the sole sponsor of Closing-the-Gap.com, a Web site developed by Hemisphere Inc. dedicated to the exploration of multiethnic healthcare issues.

Current Health Disparities Projects of the National Academies of Science- - A search of the National Academy of Science website using the term "Health Disparities"yielded descriptions of 19 current projects.

Diabetes in African AmericansThis page is provided by the The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases conducts and supports research on many of the most serious diseases affecting public health. The Institute supports much of the clinical research on the diseases of internal medicine and related subspecialty fields as well as many basic science disciplines.

Healthy People 2010 - Healthy People 2010 is the prevention agenda for the Nation. It is a statement of national health objectives designed to identify the most significant preventable threats to health and to establish national goals to reduce these threats. 

Healthy Virginians 2010 Health Objectives - This initiative is part of a nationwide health promotion and disease prevention agenda for the first decade of the 21st century. That agenda is set forth in Healthy People 2010, a comprehensive document that establishes targets for improving the health of all people in the United States.

Institute for African American Health - The mission of the Institute for African American Health, Inc. (IAAH) is to address the basic health issues affecting the African American Community, as well as all other Americans. Basic health issues are addressed through improved clinical care, increased public health education, sponsored health care forums and symposia, targeted clinical research and enlightened consumer participation in health promotion, disease prevention and health care cost containment

Minority AIDS Project - MINORITY AIDS PROJECT is the first community-based HIV/AIDS organization in the United States established and managed by people of color. It was founded in 1985 by Archbishop Carl Bean and members of the Unity Fellowship Church

Minority Health Initiative - The Office of Research on Minority Health launched the Minority Health Initiative (MHI), a research agenda comprised of a series of multi-year biomedical and behavioral research studies and training programs in 1992. The MHI is designed to strengthen NIH=s commitment and responsiveness to the health research and training needs of minority Americans by building on previous NIH efforts to improve the overall health of minorities and to train more minority biomedical and behavioral researchers.

Minority Health Project at the UNC-CH School of Public Health - The overall purpose of the Minority Health Project (MHP) is to improve the quality of available data on racial and ethnic populations, to expand the capacity of minority-health researchers to conduct statistical research and develop research proposals, and to foster a network of researchers in minority health. Toward these goals, the Minority Health Project, in collaboration with the Center for Health Statistics Research, other units in the University of North Carolina School of Public Health, the National Center for Health Statistics and the Association of Schools of Public Health, conducts educational programs including the Annual Summer Public Health Research Institute and Videoconference on Minority Health, provides information on research and sources of data on minority health, and maintains an extensive set of links to organizations at UNC-CH and elsewhere.

National Academy of Sciences - The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) is a private, non-profit, self-perpetuating society of distinguished scholars engaged in scientific and engineering research, dedicated to the furtherance of science and technology and to their use for the general welfare. Upon the authority of the charter granted to it by the Congress in 1863, the Academy has a mandate that requires it to advise the federal government on scientific and technical matters. Dr. Bruce Alberts is the president of the National Academy of Sciences.

National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS - The National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS (BLCA) was founded in 1987. BLCA's mission is to inform, coordinate and organize the volunteer efforts of indigenous Black leadership including clergy, elected officials, medical practitioners, businessmen and women, social policy experts, and the media to meet the challenge of fighting AIDS in their local communities.

National Black Women's Health Project - NBWHP SEEKS TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF BLACK WOMEN BY PROVIDING WELLNESS EDUCATION AND SERVICES, HEALTH INFORMATION AND ADVOCACY. Run by Black women for Black women NBWHP is committed to improving the health status and lives of America’s 17.8 Black women.

National Center for Health Statistics- - NCHS is the Federal Government's principal vital and health statistics agency. Since 1960, when the National Office of Vital Statistics and the National Health Survey merged to form NCHS, the agency has provided a wide variety of data with which to monitor the Nation's health. Since then, NCHS has received several legislative mandates and authorities.

OBSSR Strategic Plan for Health Disparities Research - Because the existence of racial and ethnic health disparities are to a large extent due to the influence of behavioral and social, rather than biological factors, the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR) is committed to developing better knowledge of their specific causes and participating in finding solutions. The

Office of Behavioral and Social Science Research at NIH - opened officially on July 1, 1995. The U.S. Congress established the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR) in the Office of the Director, NIH, in recognition of the key role that behavioral and social factors often play in illness and health. The OBSSR mission is to stimulate behavioral and social sciences research throughout NIH and to integrate these areas of research more fully into others of the NIH health research enterprise, thereby improving our understanding, treatment, and prevention of disease. To provide the OBSSR with counsel in fulfilling its mission, the Behavioral and Social Sciences Coordinating Committee serves as an internal advisory board. Now celebrating its fifth year, the Office is under the directorship of Raynard S. Kington, M.D., Ph.D.

Office of Family Assistance - is located in the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families and oversees the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Program which was created by the Welfare Reform Law of 1996. TANF became effective July 1, 1997, and replaced what was then commonly known as welfare: Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) and the Job Opportunities and Basic Skills Training (JOBS) programs

Office of Minority Health - The Office of Minority Health (OMH) was created by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in 1985 as a result of the Report of the Secretary's Task Force on Black and Minority Health. Under the direction of the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Minority Health, OMH advises the Secretary and the Office of Public Health and Science (OPHS) on public health issues affecting American Indians and Alaska Natives, Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Other Pacific Islanders, Blacks/African Americans, and Hispanics/Latinos. The mission of OMH is to improve the health of racial and ethnic populations through the development of effective health policies and programs that help to eliminate disparities in health.

Southeast Alabama Sickle Cell Association - The Southeast Alabama Sickle Cell Association, Inc., (SEASCA) is a non-profit organization supported by state funds and private donations.  SEASCA was established in 1974 and incorporated June 18, 1975, in Lee County, Alabama.  The corporation was established to provide services related to sickle cell disease in the southeastern section of Alabama.  The agency's "Articles of Incorporation" and by-laws provide for the management of its affairs by a Board of Directors.  The organization currently provides sickle cell testing, counseling and numerous other services to a 15-county area.
